Definitions
- CPSNL College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador

Responsibility
Membership policy is approved by the Board of Directors. Membership fees for the upcoming membership year are presented for approval at the Annual General Meeting (or special meeting).
Requirement
As per Section 6 (Membership) of the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Act:
- All medical practitioners who hold a medical license shall be members of the association notwithstanding anything contained in the by-laws.
- The association may charge fees for membership in the association.
- Where the association charges a fee for membership all medical practitioners referred to in subsection (1) who pay the fee established by the association shall have full voting rights notwithstanding anything contained in the by-laws.
- Where the association charges a fee for membership and a medical practitioner referred to in subsection (1) does not pay the fee the association may notify the college of that medical practitioner’s failure to pay the fee.
Categories & Fees
As per chapter 19 (Fees and Appropriations), section 19.1 (Fees) of the NLMA by-laws:
- 19.1.1. Every member of the Association shall pay to the Association the annual fee set at the Annual General Meeting or at a special meeting of the Association called for that purpose.
Fee proration is based on 365 days per membership year.
Licensed
Members who hold a medical license issued by CPSNL.
Members who hold a medical license.

Refunds
Refunds only apply to the remaining membership term from the date of request, regardless of when a membership category change was applicable.
Deadline
Licensed members must complete the application process within 30 days of license start date and complete the renewal process by February 15 for each year thereafter. A late fee may be applied any time following these deadlines.
Payments
Membership payments are accepted by major credit card (American Express, MasterCard, Visa), or Interac e-transfer when payment by credit card is not possible. Payment by cheque, debit, cash, or other forms is not accepted.

Procedure
Joining
Licensed
- As part of the licensure application process, CPSNL notifies licensed medical practitioners of the requirement to complete the NLMA membership application process and pay the applicable fee via the NLMA Membership Application Form.
- Medical practitioners who are licensed under CPSNL are considered NLMA members from the date of licensure.
- CPSNL notifies the NLMA when a medical license has been issued.
- The NLMA notifies CPSNL when a licensed medical practitioner who owes the NLMA a membership fee does not complete the application process within 30 days (or other deadline).
- The NLMA notifies CPSNL when the licensed medical practitioner completes the application process by e-mail to [email protected].
- CPSNL cancels the medical practitioner’s license within 30 days of the notice unless the NLMA notifies CPSNL that they have paid the applicable fee.
Non-Licensed
Non-licensed individuals may apply for membership via the NLMA Membership Application Form at any time.
Renewing
Licensed
- As part of the licensure renewal process, CPSNL notifies licensed medical practitioners of the requirement to complete the NLMA membership renewal process and pay the applicable fee via the NLMA Membership Renewal Form.
- Licensed members are sent renewal notices by e-mail in early January (no later than January 15), with instruction to renew via the NLMA Membership Renewal Form by the February 15 deadline.
- CPSNL provides the NLMA a list of licensed medical practitioners following their renewal deadline of January 15, including name and license number.
- Renewal reminders continue by e-mail and other means up until February 15. Reminders will include information about next steps if renewal is not completed.
- On February 16, non-renewed licensed members are notified by e-mail that a late fee has been applied, and CPSNL will be notified.
- CPSNL is notified of licensed non-renewed members on February 16 (or other deadline).
- The NLMA notifies CPSNL when the licensed medical practitioner completes the renewal process.
- CPSNL cancels the medical practitioner’s license within 30 days of the notice unless the NLMA notifies CPSNL that they have paid the applicable fee.
Non-Licensed
- Non-licensed members are sent renewal notices by e-mail in early January (no later than January 15), with instruction to renew via the NLMA Membership Renewal Form by the February 15 deadline.
- Renewal reminders continue by e-mail and other means up until February 15.
- On February 16, non-renewed non-licensed members are discontinued, and cancellation notices are sent by e-mail.
Changes
- Members may request a change in membership category by e-mail to [email protected].
- Changes are effective on the date of status change or date of request, whichever is later.
Cancelling
- Members may request a cancellation of membership via the NLMA Membership Cancellation Form.
- Changes are effective on the date of status change or date of request, whichever is later.
- Refunds, if applicable, only apply to the remaining membership term.
