Changes coming to Electronic Death Notification (EDN)

The Vital Statistics Division, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is developing a new electronic portal for medical professionals who enter and certify death registrations.

The Electronic Death Notification Project will enable the online submission of death registration information into an existing IT system, thereby substantially reducing and/or eliminating the current paper based, manual data entry process, improving the timeliness of registrations and enhancing data integrity.

The electronic portal for entering and certifying death registrations will be available to physicians through the existing HealtheNL portal. If you do not have access or login credentials to HealtheNL, access can be obtained by filling out this form.

The Electronic Death Notification Portal is scheduled to go live in October with online training planned for all users in mid-September. A schedule of training dates and login access for training sessions will be made available leading up to the launch.

The new portal has been developed in consultation with the Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO), the Information Technology branch for the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, along with Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Health Information (NLCHI), the four Regional Health Authorities, and a subset of users representing Funeral Homes across the province along with representation from the MUN School of Medicine. The Project team, has also been working diligently with a group of users representing the end users affected by this change, to develop the detailed functional needs for the portal, test the usability and ease of use, along with ensuring all the needed steps have been captured.
