Making decisions for emperic antibiotic treatment requires a knowledge of provincial antibiotic susceptibility trends. Antibiograms help health care professionals choose the most effective antibiotics to empirically treat infections, based on local susceptibility patterns. Provincial antibiotic susceptibility trends for bacteria isolated from clinical specimens in Newfoundland and Labrador in 2013 have been collected and are now available to clinicians via the free Antibiograms app for iPhone/iPad and Android as a decision support tool. The app is searchable by bacterial type and provides percentage susceptibility.
The process to use the app involves two steps:
1. Download the Antibiograms app by Portable Databases onto your mobile device from either the Apple App Store or from Google Play.
2. After you have downloaded the app, you will need to upload the Newfoundland and Labrador antibiogram database (.db) file containing local antibiogram information. To receive the database file, email firstname.lastname@example.org. Tap on the email attachment to download the database file, and open the file in the Antibiograms app on your device.
