CPD @ Dusk: Geriatric Therapeutics in Family Practice

At the end of this program, participants will be able to:


  • Describe the conditions and situations in which the use of antipsychotic medications is deemed appropriate for elderly primary care patients

  • Describe non-pharmacologic interventions for behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia

  • Identify which patients are appropriate for consideration of antipsychotic de-prescribing

  • Implement a de-prescribing program for appropriate patients

  • Define polypharmacy, understand its impact on the elderly and the importance of deprescribing.

  • Identify potential barriers to deprescribing and effective strategies to overcome same.

  • Develop a general approach to deprescribing

  • Discuss current recommendations regarding appropriate deprescribing (when and how) of some common medications including: statins, antihypertensives, oral hypoglycemic agents, cholinesterase inhibitors and bisphosphonates

  • Describe the minimum criteria for empirical antibiotic use in urinary tract infections

  • Describe the difference between urinary tract infection and colonization

  • Prescribe appropriate treatment regimens for urinary tract infections
